bjork: the voice of iceland

“People are always asking me about eskimos, but there are no eskimos in Iceland.” – Bjork

when it comes to icelandic music, only one woman stands out and that is bjork.

yea, yea, yea… me old school and all, now that the world is digging new icelandic music from acts like of monsters and men and sigur ros, but bjork will always hold the iceland flag up high in the global music industry. well, at least for me.

when i first heard her voice in the track ‘venus as a boy’ back in ’92, i was simply mesmerised by her manic vocal gymnastics that seemed to roll around the fjords of the endless landscapes of her homeland.

that motivated me to find out more about her previous musical incarnation as the lead singer of the band ‘the sugarcubes’ and that was certainly music to my ears too.

of course, i’m not going to dribble this entire post with my musings on this creative musical genius. you, the reader, may probably know her more than i do.

instead this bjork fan wanted to share with you a great music video she did with michel gondry many years back for a track called ‘joga’ – a video that obviously displays the best of iceland’s majestic scenery.
